New Systems If you Have an Accident Driving a Car

When you are driving a car, if you have an accident you know there are certain things you need to do such as call 911 and, if you can ensure the vehicle is safe.

However there may be situations when you cannot do this because you are unconscious, or injured, or trapped in your vehicle and unable to move.

Now and in the future, more and more vehicles are being programmed to be able to handle an emergency situation on your behalf. For example, Daimler Chrysler has what they call an Enhanced Accident Emergency System or EARS which, in the event of an accident when the airbag deploys, turns on the interior lighting, unlocks the doors and shuts off the fuel. Volkswagen has a similar system which also switches on the hazard lights and disconnects the battery terminal from the alternator.

GM and BMW in addition have a system which automatically alerts their response centers, OnStar in the case of GM and Assist for BMW. Once the response center has the information they pass it on to the emergency responders.

How to Control a Skid

It is important to know how to control a skid. Firstly keep both hands on the steering wheel and try not to panic. Ease off the accelerator and look where you want your car to go and keep your focus there even if your car starts to spin. Eye-hand coordination is incredibly important.

For a rear wheel or all wheel skid in which your car starts to spin out of line, steer into the skid, which basically means that you steer to the same side as the back end of the car is sliding towards. This can be difficult as your instinct is to steer in the opposite direction to the skid. If you find yourself in a front wheel skid straighten the steering wheel.

Almost all vehicles are now fitted with ABS (assisted brake steering) and don’t be afraid to follow the “stomp and steer” advice. ABS is not designed to help you to stop sooner it is a mechanism that allows you to keep steering while breaking and can make a tremendous difference. If you feel the brake pedal vibrating or trembling under your foot or a faint tapping noise while you are braking it is just the ABS doing its job. Keep on with the ABS until you bring the vehicle under control.

Facts About Traffic Safety Around the World

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), someone somewhere in the world is killed in a motor vehicle crash every 30 seconds. That equates to over 3,300 car crash fatalities every day and more than one million every year. The WHO has compiled a number of other facts about road safety around the world some of which are as follows.

Low and middle income countries account for only 40 percent of the world’s automobiles yet they account for over 85 percent of the world’s car crash fatalities.

The WHO estimates that over the next five years, car crashes will become the third leading cause of premature death around the world.

More than 500 children are killed in car crashes every day in the world and in certain Middle Eastern and Asian countries, pedestrians account for up to half of all deaths resulting from a traffic accident.

Nearly three times as many children 15 years of age and under are killed in car crashes in developing countries as are killed in industrialized nations.

In Africa, more people between the ages of 15 and 44 are killed in car accidents than by malaria.

The global financial cost associated with car crashes is estimated by the WHO to be between $65 billion and $100 billion.

Higher Fines for Seat Belt Law Violations Lead to More People Wearing Them

Research conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in 2011 revealed that compliance with seat belt laws among drivers across the United States substantially increased when the amount and frequency of fines for violating those laws increased. The NHTSA confirmed through reports associated with the research that making seat belt laws primary rather than secondary in terms of enforcement is the most effective way to get drivers to buckle their seat belts every time they get behind the wheel of a motor vehicle. States with primary seat belt law enforcement and hefty fines for violators have the lowest rates of violations in the country.

States have been trying for years to get people to establish a habit of buckling their seat belts but have found it difficult to do so. Habitual seat belt use nationwide was at 85 percent in 2010 which is encouraging but still much lower than other countries like Canada, Australia, and many countries in Europe, all of which have usage rates in the upper 90th percentile. The research conducted by the NHTSA proved to legislators that stiffer penalties increased seat belt law compliance but that the United States still has plenty of room for improvement in the way of regular seat belt use by America’s drivers.

Waterbury Drivers: Avoid these Bad Habits for a Safer Commute

No driver is perfect. But all drivers have a sense for the difference between good driving habits and bad driving habits. The problem with bad habits is that over time people question them less and less, until they eventually become our standard methods of operation. When it comes to driving, these bad habits can be deadly, which is why it is a good idea to point them out from time to time. Here we will take a look at some of the worst driving habits of Waterbury drivers.

Trying to catch a yellow light – Sitting in traffic can be painful. Often times those in front of you do not move quickly enough, and when you’re running late or just feeling impatient, it can be tempting to try to speed through a yellow light in order to make up for lost time. Of course, this practice has led to countless thousands of traffic accidents, injuries, and even deaths over the years. It is never recommended that you speed up to go through a yellow light.

Speeding – Everyone has done it. Speeding is probably as American as apple pie, but that that does not make it right. Especially in residential zones, commercial areas, and school zones, speeding can be particularly deadly. One way to avoid speeding is to remember that you’ll get better gas mileage at lower speeds. Leave from your destination a little early in order to give yourself more time to arrive. And remember that getting a speeding ticket not only costs you the fine, but can also cost you in terms of higher insurance premiums.

Distractions – Some driving distractions may be unavoidable, such as the actions of passengers in the car with you. But, many driving distractions, such as eating, using a smart phone, and playing with your pets, are not only avoidable, but are unnecessary. Remember that the road deserves your undivided attention, and leave the distractions for after the drive.

-video- How Waterbury Residents Can Properly Install and Use a Child Seat

Every parent knows that the most precious occupant who will ever into their car is their child. Over the years, states across the country have adopted increasingly stringent regulations which are meant to protect children while they are passengers in vehicles on the nation’s roads. Children are the most vulnerable among us when it comes to the injuries sustained in an auto accident. Because of this, every parent and every person who accepts the responsibility of transporting a child in an automobile should familiarize himself or herself with how to properly install and operate a car seat.

Here we present a healthful instructional video which will give you insightful tips on how to install a car seat:

Not only is it the law that all the infants be properly secured in a car seat when traveling on Waterbury roads, but it’s also good common sense. Many people believe that they can simply sit a child on their laps, and in the event of an accident that the child can be easily restrained. However, nothing could be further from the truth. Considering the fact that millions of adults are injured every year in auto accidents, it should be clear that the force of an automobile collision can only reasonably be mitigated by seatbelt and car seat use.

Young Drivers Still Least Likely to Buckle Up

Seat belts save lives.  This is a simple and powerful fact that has been proven time and time again in studies and in real life across the country.  Though the vast majority of adults routinely buckle up, the younger crowd has a much lower rate of seat belt use, and also a much higher propensity for injury causing car wrecks.  The fact that they fail to buckle up in the same numbers as the more mature population has resulted in young adults being the most likely to suffer serious injury in a car crash.

In order to turn the tide parents, in Waterbury should instill in their young children a habit of always using their seat belts.  This habit will hopefully continue into young adulthood and help protect your child in the unfortunate event of an automobile accident.

Many young people avoid putting on their seat belts as a result of poor judgment.  They may believe that seat belt use is unnecessary if they are only expecting to travel a short distance.  Or, they may believe that wearing a seat belt makes them seem “nerdy” in the eyes of their peers.  Another reason young people may not wear their seatbelts is due to the fact that they often move around in the vehicle.  Teens and young adults can often be seen dancing and roughhousing while in a moving vehicle.  In their minds, wearing a seatbelt restricts their abilities to move freely about the car.

Of course, mature adults realize that seat belt use is about safety, not making a fashion statement.  But getting this point across to young adults can be difficult.  This is why it is recommended that parents lead by example, and always buckle up.  And parents are also recommended to always enforce a policy of buckling up when traveling with their children.

The Law Offices of Hastings, Cohan & Walsh, LLP encourages all parents to talk to their children about buckling up. We can be reached at  89 Oak Street Hartford, CT 06106-1515   (888) 244-5480
