Young Girl Was Killed in Waterbury

On Wednesday, July 1 a young girl was killed in Waterbury.

According to police, the accident happened shortly after 2 a.m. when a 16 year old boy was driving a stolen Nissan Maxima at a high rate of speed. He lost control and then crashed into a utility pole close to 541 Wolcott Street. The impact was so great, the car split in two and both of the passengers were ejected.

However, following the accident the front part of the Nissan was hit by another stolen car, this time a 2012 Subaru Legacy. Then the drivers of the Nissan and the Subaru fled the scene in another vehicle. A passenger in the Nissan, 15 year old Sajenae Winfrey, died on arrival at hospital and an unidentified 13 year old boy from Waterbury, also a passenger in the Nissan, was taken to Connecticut Children’s Medical Center with critical injuries.

The same night, the driver of the Maxima was arrested and has been charged with manslaughter, evading responsibility, and larceny.

Police are continuing to investigate accident and expect to make more arrests.
