School Bus Crashed and Student Seriously Injured

On Monday, June 8, a school bus crashed resulting in serious injuries to a middle school boy.

According to the police, the accident happened shortly after 2.30 p.m. on Todd Road, when the school bus, being driven by 57 year old Mark Hudobenko, swerved and hit a tree. Hudobenko said he was forced to swerve as another vehicle came into his lane and this was verified by one of the passengers on the bus. All of the students on the bus were wearing seatbelts but one of them, who attended the middle school, suffered serious injuries and was taken to St. Mary’s Hospital in Waterbury and then was airlifted to the Connecticut Children’s Medical Center in Hartford. He is currently in a serious but stable condition.

Two other students were taken to St. Mary’s hospital and released later and Hudobenko was uninjured.

Police are now investigating the driver, who it appears had not been drinking alcohol and now toxicology is awaited to see if he had any other substance in his blood. They are also seeking a search warrant to check Hudobenko’s phone records to see if he was on the phone at the time of the crash. He has a clean record having driven school buses for 10 years.
