Man Has Lucky Escape

On Friday April 24 a man had a lucky escape following an accident on the Interstate 91 northbound.

According to authorities, the accident happened about 7.30 in the morning near exit 27. A Connecticut Department of Transportation pickup truck was stationary on the right shoulder when it was rear ended by a 2007 Toyota Corolla being driven by 24 year old Jonathan Edwards of Meriden. There were two men in the truck and 53 year old Glenn Gove of Wethersfield who was actually in the truck bed putting out the last cone for the project, was thrown out of the truck, over the guardrail and down a river embankment.

Gove, Edwards and the driver of the pickup were all taken by ambulance to Hartford Hospital and luckily all three only had minor injuries.

Some of the lanes on the highway were closed resulting in traffic delays but were reopened by 9 a.m.

So far no charges have been announced.

Man From Waterbury Killed in Crash

Early on Monday evening, March 9, a man from Waterbury was killed in a crash on Interstate 691 in Cheshire.

According to police, the accident happened just before 6 p.m. on the eastbound Interstate near exit 3 in Cheshire. Traffic was congested when a 51 year old man from New Haven, driving a 2003 Honda Accord rear ended a 1987 Oldsmobile Cutlass driven by 66 year old Eugene Tourangeau of Waterbury, whose Oldsmobile was then pushed into a 2005 Toyota car driven by a 51 year old woman from Hamden.

Tourangeau was pronounced dead at the scene and the woman from Hamden was taken to the Hospital of Saint Raphael with minor injuries and the New Haven man was transported to Midstate Hospital.

Interstate 691 was closed for several hours while police carried out their investigation and cleared the scene. So far no charges have been filed.

Four Car Accident Leaves One Dead

On Saturday, February 8, there was a four car accident on the Interstate 95 southbound.

According to Connecticut State Police, Mary Chiapulis, aged 55, from Boston Massachusetts, was driving her 2009 Hyundai the wrong direction down the interstate. When she was near the Branford Service Plaza between Exit 53 and 54 she collided with three other cars shortly before 1 a.m.

According to State Police, Chiapulis’ first hit the passenger side of a 2004 Acura MDX driven by 54 year old Franck Dalembert of Norwalk, then she hit a 2008 Ford head on in the left lane. The Ford was being driven by 30 yearold Daniel Rizzo, of Milford. Finally a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee being driven by 50 year old Patsy Depalmer of Woodbrige, swerved to avoid the collision between Chiapulis and Rizzo, but the Jeep was hit by Chiapulis in her Hyundai.

Ambulances from the Branford and Guilford fire departments as well as from American Medical Response took the accident victims to New Haven area hospitals. Chiapulis died and the current status of the other victims is unknown although some are thought to be seriously injured.

Two Vehicle Accident in Simsbury Leaves a Man Dead

On Monday afternoon a person was killed in a two vehicle accident on Bushy Hill Road.

According to police, the accident happened shortly after 3 p.m. in front of 299 Bushy Hill Road. Two cars collided, and although snow had begun to fall around the state, police said that weather does not appear to have been a factor. No more details of the cause of the accident have been revealed at this time.

Lifestar was called to the scene, but due to the weather, the helicopter could not fly, and medical personnel rushed one of the drivers, who is as yet unnamed, to Saint Francis Hospital and Medical Center where he died the same afternoon.

Bushy Hill Road was closed in Simsbury following the crash.

The North Central Municipal Accident Reconstruction Squad, along with Simsbury Police Department are still investigating the accident.

Man Seriously Injured in Torrington Crash

On Sunday morning a Harwinton man was seriously injured and taken to hospital following an early morning crash on Harwinton Avenue.

According to Torrington Police, the accident happened at around 1.15 a.m. on Harwinton Avenue when 33 year old Brian Hannon, of Scoville Hill Road was driving southbound up the hill in a 2007 Volkswagon Rabbit. He then lost control of the vehicle, hit the northbound shoulder and the car became airborne. The car then landed on its side on the roadway. He was alone in the car at the time.

Hannon was first taken to Waterbury Hospital then as his condition worsened he was transferred to Hartford Hospital. Currently there are no updates as to his condition.

Torrington Police are still investigating and have called in a specialist investigation team due to the severity of Hannon’s injuries. So far they have revealed that weather was not a factor in the accident.

Elderly Man Dies in Border Accident

On Monday afternoon there was a fatal accident on Route 10 and 202.

According to Granby Connecticut police, the accident happened around 1 p.m. on Route 10 just north of the state line with Granby. William Burgess, who was 91 years old, had been driving south on Route 10/202 in Southwick, Massachusetts, when he veered off the road and struck a rock. His car then flipped over and Burgess was pronounced dead at the scene.

Route 10 was closed at the Connecticut border for several hours as authorities responded to the crash. Granby police arrived at the scene at about the same time as Southwick police, but left as soon as they learned the crash was in Massachusetts. Traffic was then backed up into Granby, CT and also in Southwick, and drivers were encouraged to seek alternate routes.

Police continue to investigate the accident.

Two Injured When Car Loses Control

On Saturday afternoon, two people were critically injured in an accident involving several vehicles.

According to Southington police, the accident happened on Saturday afternoon on Laning Street west of Doral Lane. The driver of a 2010 Honda Civic was traveling westbound on Laning Street and he lost control of the vehicle and hit a male pedestrian, who was later identified as Garrett Costello. He then struck a 2007 Dodge Caliber which belonged to Garrett Costello, and which was stopped on the right shoulder of the eastbound lane of Laning Street. He then continued traveling westbound and collided with the rear of a 2008 Ford Fusion that was also traveling in the same direction on Laning Street.

Garrett Costello was taken to Hartford Hospital with serious injuries. The driver of the Dodge Caliber, identified as Cindy Costello, was treated at the scene for serious leg injuries and was also transported to Hartford Hospital. The operators of the other two vehicles were not injured.

Police Cruiser Involved in Crash

A multiple crash on Interstate 91 northbound in Hartford also involved a state trooper’s cruiser.

According to authorities, the accident happened at around 5 p.m. on Friday between exits 32 and 33. The trooper was in his cruiser parked in the breakdown lane of I 91 during a traffic stop when his vehicle was struck by a car that was involved in an accident with other cars. The Nissan Altima was traveling in the left lane when it came upon slowing traffic and swerved right. The driver, Elmarie Aviles, hit the driver’s side door of a car on her right, then over corrected, causing her car to veer and strike another vehicle in the right center lane. She then slid across three lanes into the breakdown lane and struck the police cruiser.

The trooper, who wasn’t immediately identified, was taken to a hospital as a precaution, but only suffered minor injuries as did the other parties.

Aviles was issued an infraction for traveling too fast for the conditions and failure to move over when approaching a stationary emergency vehicle.

Rollover Accident Kills One and Two Injured

One man died and two people were seriously injured following an accident on Sunday on the Interstate 91 in Enfield.

According to Connecticut State Police, the accident happened at around 7.30 p.m. just south of Exit 49. A 2002 Honda Accord which was being driven by 34 year old Vitally Fodor of Westfield, Mass. crashed into a metal guide rail. The reasons for the crash are not yet known. The car then overturned, and he and his two passengers were ejected from the vehicle.

Fodor was pronounced dead at the scene and the two passengers were taken to area hospitals with what are thought to be serious injuries.

As a result of the accident, part of I-91 southbound between exits 48 and 49 was closed for several hours causing traffic jams, but all lanes were reopened early Monday morning.

Teen Dies in Rollover Crash

A crash early Saturday morning resulted in the death of a 19 year old Cheshire woman.

According to police, the accident happened shortly after 2 a.m. on Route 9 south when 22 year old Anthony Longo lost control of the Mitsubishi Lancer he was driving. He went off the road and crashed into a light pole and a rock wall and then the car rolled several times before coming to rest in the median of the Exit 21 on ramp.

Isabella Gozzo was a passenger in the car and according to police it appeared that she was not wearing a seat belt. She was ejected and was taken to Hartford Hospital where she was pronounced dead.

Longo, who was wearing a seat belt, only suffered minor injuries and he was also was taken to Hartford Hospital.

The case is still under investigation and it is not yet known if charges will be filed.
